Satellite Data Reveal Concerns Regarding Mangrove Restoration Efforts in Southern China

چکیده
Mangrove restoration projects are often evaluated based on the increase in mangrove forest (MF) area, but reliability of this indicator as a measure successful is questionable. Considering both numerical and quality dimensions, study assessed efforts Leizhou Peninsula Beibu Gulf (LP-BG) China. The hypothesis was that due to limited social capital investment restoration, there exist hierarchical differences urgency restoration. Time-series Landsat imagery from Google Earth Engine platform used analyze MF distribution 2000 2020. A resilience indicator, incorporating resistance adaptive capacity, constructed assess within identified boundaries. results revealed an area 6655.87 ha 14,607.93 However, majority (79.6%) patches exhibited low (values < 3), with only minority (51 patches) demonstrating high resilience. Interestingly, MFs reserve displayed higher resilience, these areas did not exhibit significant spatial expansion MFs. These findings highlight limitation relying solely net growth Instead, ecologically optimal solution recommended, focusing expanding conservation boundaries include remnant outside protected areas, rather than creating new planting areas. This provides assessment framework evaluate efficiency offers insights for local decision makers guide future endeavors.

Antibacterial and antitumor potential of actinomycetes isolated from mangrove soil in the Maowei Sea of the southern coast of China
Mangroves are the tidal forest existing in the intertidal zone and usually considered as the special marine ecosystem. In the present study, 452 actinomycetes were recovered from nine diferent sites at Maowei Sea Mangrove Reserve in Qinzhou (Guangxi province, China). Among them, Seventy-four strains were purified for 16s RNA gene sequencing and further characterization. The results indicated th...

متن کاملIdentifying suitable mangrove habitats at the local scale for mangrove afforestation in southern Iran
Afforestation has been one of the most effective measures to compensate for mangrove ecosystem loss across the world and requires a detailed understanding of all contributing hydrological and physico-chemical factors affecting their growth. In this study, the Maxent habitat suitability model was employed to identify suitable mangrove habitats in the Hara Roud-e Gaz Protected Area. Presence da...
متن کاملStability of exotic annual grasses following restoration efforts in southern California coastal sage scrub
1. Restoration of semi-arid shrub ecosystems often requires control of invasive grasses but the effects of these grass-control treatments on native and exotic forbs have not been investigated adequately to assess long-term stability. In southern California, coastal sage scrub (CSS) vegetation is one semi-arid shrub community that has been invaded extensively by both exotic grasses and exotic fo...
متن کاملBenthic Nutrient Fluxes from Mangrove Sediments of an Anthropogenically Impacted Estuary in Southern China
Mangroves serve as either sinks or sources for inorganic and organic nutrients and can mitigate anthropogenic nutrient pollution, control the production in adjacent systems, and prevent eutrophication. To better understand the nutrient dynamics in a subtropical mangrove, we employed a three-way approach in the Nanliu River Estuary, southern China: Pore water profiles and sediment incubations re...
